For many young Americans on twitter, Timberland’s new ad intended for a Hong Kong audience has hit too close to home. This ad reads: “You’re never going to be able to retire. Why should your boots? American millennials are expected to work longer than their parents, as the safety net of Social Security retirement is not guaranteed to be around when they retire, despite paying into the system. When you factor in student loan debt, lack of wage increase, and the rising cost of living in major cities across the United States, the future looks very bleak for young Americans. While the ad’s target demographic was for Hong Kong’s diligent work society, there has been no word if the ad will run in the United States where it has resonated with a significant portion of its population.
