Driving When You Are In A Wheelchair

Wheelchair independent individuals do not need to stop driving, with a correctly modified vehicle, they can continue to drive like they did before their disability. They will need to be evaluated to find out what kind of modifications are needed for them to drive safely. The modification of equipment is based on the wheelchair user’s motor skills, reaction time, road test performance, medical history, and the driver’s ability to get a driver’s license.

There are two ways in which it is possible for a wheelchair user to drive a vehicle:

  • Directly from the wheelchair, which should be safely secured in place with wheelchair tie downs.
  • Transfer from the wheelchair into a standard or adapted driver’s seat.
